At St.Peter's RC High school students study the OCR syllabus, and much of the focus of the AS/A2 course is on practical work, which is worth 40% of the total grade, allowing students to produce their own media text using the department's suite of iMacs and cutting edge software, such as Photoshop, iMovie, QuarkXPress, Dreamweaver, and Pro Tools. In Year 12 students have the option to create their own teenage magazine or set of adverts, and in Year 13 students are let loose with the video camera, and have to choose between producing either a music video, a film trailer, or a film promotional package. On the theory side, in Year 12 students sit two exams alongside their coursework. The first of these is textual analysis, in which students analyse key scenes from action/adventure films, and study newspapers and the representation of different celebrities. The second module, New Media Technologies, looks at the rise of Digital technology, and how the Internet, DVD, Games Consoles and mobile phones are becoming ever more prevalent in society. For Students in Year 13, they first complete the Critical Research module, which gives them the opportunity to complete their own study on Sport and Media, Women and film, Children and tv, or Popular music and youth culture. In the Spring and Summer terms, students prepare for the Media Issues and Debates exam, where they can answer questions on Genre and Film, Magazines and Gender, Soaps, or News. The Media Studies department and its students have enjoyed an excellent set of results over the past few years, and continue to strive to stay ahead of current developments in the Media world.
