Unit outline
ALL PUPILS MUST:
Look in detail at a moving image media text.
Be able to talk and make sense of denotative and connotative levels of meaning.
Understand the conection between audience and content.
Take part in assessed exercises based on that text, making notes and concise
written reports on relevant aspects of it.
Produce an essay that warrants assessment for GCSE English.
MOST
PUPILS SHOULD:
Produce practiacal pieces that demonstrate sound theoretical knowledge and understanding.
Organise ideas into paragraphs.
select key scenes from the text as evidence to back up own ideas.
Make some use of specialist media terminology.
Use a variety of linguistic and structural features.
Make comparisons between texts and draw on own personal media knowledge to extend
ideas.
SOME
PUPILS COULD:
Be made aware of key media theories and debates.
Examine the cultural context that the text emerged from.
Examine the institution that produced the text and the ways in which this might
have affected the texts production.

AO3 (En3) Writing - Principle methods of assessment
Candidates are required to demonstrate their ability to:
Communicate clearly and imaginatively, using and adapting forms for different
readers & purposes.
Organise ideas into sentences, paragraphs and whole texts using a variety of
linguistic and structural features.
Use a range of sentence structures effectively with accurate punctuation &
spelling.
Note: AQA emphasise that we must be teaching the students how to
ANALYSE, REVIEW AND COMMENT.
They must demonstrate these skills in their final written coursework piece.
Reading - Understanding texts (as distinct media artefacts)
to develop understanding and appreciation of texts, pupils should be taught:
- denotative and
conotative levels of meaning.
- explain the choices that have been made in the construction of the text using
specific media terminology.
- analyse and discuss alternative interprstations of the text.
- have some knowledge of the ways in which the social context in which the text
was created had some bearing on its content and form.
- reflect on the ways in which character and place are represented and the meaning
these choices empart.

It is suggested that the first half of the term's starters be media based around denotation and connotation; camera angles and techniques and specific media terminology. Then, in the second half of the term move on to look at more specific 'English' based starters to do with, for example, the revision of complex sentences, use of the colon and semi-colon and use of discourse markers.
Classes could be organised around an alternating theoretical and practical basis. Each piece of practical work produced should be accompanied by an evaluation that could be either writtn or oral.

Pupils should be confident at analysing media texts; using media terminology and writing discursively on a given topic.
All pupils should have the opportunity to develop writing skills by developing their discursive skills in response to media texts. Assessments will be made for all pupils against the AQA mark scheme.
These assessments will form the En3 Media coursework assessment.
