9.5 Pre-1914
Prose text and media
Unit outline
ALL PUPILS MUST:
Read and discuss key aspects of a substantial prose text;
Write an essay commenting on its content, structure and style;
Compare the written text with a film / television adaptation;
Understand and use a range of media terms;
Read a short prose text from a later period;
Take part in a discussion of the similarities and differences
between the pre-1914 text and the later text.
MOST PUPILS SHOULD:
Read the
whole text and make thoughtful interpretations of it and make detailed comparisons
between it and the later text;
Analyse the structure of the text and identify how key ideas
are developed;
Write a formal essay using quotations to support clear points;
Evaluate their own writing about texts in a short commentary
on their essay;
Comment thoughtfully on interpretations of a text in a different
medium and use appropriate media terminology;
Contribute to the organisation of discussion work on the text.
SOME PUPILS COULD:
Read other works by the pre-1914 author and make comparisons;
Write a review of the film / television adaptation for a specific
audience (possibly using ICT);
Write a comparison of the pre- and post- 1914 texts;
Take a leading role in group discussion / give a talk to the
rest of the group.
