RESEARCH PROJECT

Objective:
¥ To create a scrapbook of documents relating to a journey (real or imagined) and annotate them to comment on their PURPOSE/FUNCTION, ORGANISATION, AUTHOR/SOURCE, AUDIENCE, LANGUAGE.
Purpose/Link to :
¥ The journey scrapbook will be used while studying an Anthology of Travel texts (used in Unit 1 Exam ELLB1, Qu.2) and as practice for Exam question on unseen texts (ELLB1, Qu. 1) (ELLB1 is worth 60% of AS: tested by a one and a half hour exam. in May Õ09)
Assessment:
¥ A mark of 20 will be awarded, with a max. of 4 marks for each of the five aspects of the texts in bold above.
¥ Include as wide a range of relevant documents as you can.
¥ Use your annotations to comment on the way the textsÕ language, form and content shape their meaning.
Ideas of things to include (aim for between 10 and 20 short texts):
Bus tickets
Maps
Vaccination documents
Passport information
Postcards
Information about the destination
How to annotate:
Note PURPOSE/FUNCTION of the text e.g. a postcard is a greeting/souvenir
Comment on ORGANISATION e.g. what headers are used in a guidebook extract?
Suggest AUTHOR/SOURCE e.g. a passport comes from a government office
Identify the AUDIENCE e.g. what age of traveller is addressed by a specific travel brochure?
Comment on the LANGUAGE of a text: is it formal and functional? ? Is it detached or persuasive? Descriptive, romantic, seductive, critical (etc.)?
