Industry as a system

What are the inputs, processes and outputs of industry?

Industrial location is influenced by many factors.

How do the following influence location?:

· Transport
· Government policy
· Raw materials
· Finance
· Labour
· Energy
· Physical site.


CASE STUDY 1: Traditional heavy industrial area.

  1. ·What is the industry including the nature of it?
  2. · What are the physical and human factors that affect location?
  3. · What are the recent changes and problems to the areas?
  4. · What have been the environmental impact to the areas, especially in terms of land, sea and air pollution?


CASE STUDY 2: Footloose industry.

  1. What is the industry including the nature of it?
  2. · What are the physical and human factors that affect location?
  3. · What are the recent changes and problems to the areas?
  4. · What have been the environmental impact to the areas, especially in terms of land, sea and air pollution (these may be negligible here)?


CASE STUDY 3: TNC’s (in LEDC’s)

  1. · What is the industry including the nature of it?

  3. · What are the recent changes and problems to the areas?
  4. · What have been the environmental impact to the areas, especially in terms of land, sea and air pollution (these may be negligible here)?

    Industrial changes may have both advantages and disadvantages.

  • · Why is manufacturing declining in MEDC’s?
  • · Why are tertiary and quaternary sectors increasing?
  • · TNC’s. Why are these important in the changes in LEDC’s?
  • · How is industry becoming more sustainable? What legislation is in place to help this to happen? (reducing pollution etc)
  • What are the costs of changes in certain places?

· TNCs setting up in LEDC’s? eg Nike

· Rural urban fringes under pressure from Science or business parks? eg Waterwells Business Park in Gloucester
