Why did Gloucester develop as a settlement?

Why did Gloucester develop where it is, on the east bank of the River Severn?

How long has it been there?

These are questions you can answer with some research and would have been today's lesson. So here's what to do.

  1. Find your map of Gloucester and Cheltenham
  2. Make a list of the main reasons why settlement sites were first chosen. Here is a list of them if you didn't get them all down
  3. Use your map to see how many of these would have applied to Gloucester
  4. Draw a sketch map of Gloucester showing:
  • The river
  • Main bridges
  • Cathedral site
  • Prison (site of the old castle)
  • Priory (remains of)
  1. Mark with labels on your map the main reasons why Gloucester grew
  2. Now draw a dotted line to show the current extent of the city
  3. So when was it first settled? to find this out go to a Gloucester History Site
  4. Now use some of this information to describe how Gloucester developed. Here's a shortened version with the bits you need if the website is too long

So, by the end of this lesson you should have

1. A simple sketch map of Gloucester with the 5 main features marked. (you may need to take a double page to do this, or use a sheet of A4 paper)

2. Labels to show where you think some of the main reasons for the settlement site are, for example The River Severn (do you think the site was well defended? if so, how?) what about building materials, fertile land for growing crops, shelter from winds?

3. A description of how Gloucester developed up to the present day using the timeline to help you
