ROCKS (GEOLOGY) TOPIC

1. CREATING A ROCK STORY

* Write a story for primary school children to help them understand how ONE of the rock types forms
– Igneous
– Sedimentary
– Metamorphic
*For example “once upon a time there was small hill to the east of our town which mysteriously began to smoke….” Or turn your rocks into characters like Little Miss Igneous…
*Illustrate your story well, try to use as many geography words as you can
*Think about the presentation of your work – it has to be eye catching for a younger audience
*Think about your readers. How much do you think they will understand?

2. LIMESTONE CAVE FEATURES POSTER

Create a poster (preferably A3 size) to show how limestone caves contain features such as:-

  • Cavern

  • Pothole

  • Sump

  • Stalactites and stalagmites

  • Limestone Pillars

  • Flow stone

  • Sink holes

  • Underwater cave

Illustrate your poster well, using labels and short bite-sized pieces of text.
Use images from the web if you wish but remember to say where the cave is – could be in the UK or other parts of the world.
If you want to go further, you could include these extra cave formations and find out what they are:-

  • Bacon Formation

  • Soda Straws

  • Cave pearl formations

  • Helictites

  • Anthodites

3. TOURISM PLANNING IN LIMESTONE AREAS

You have been asked by the Peak District National Park to help them protect the landscape, animals and plants from damage by the ever increasing numbers of tourists who want to visit the National Park.

Design a plan to ensure that visitors do not damage the area further, yet are still able to enjoy its beauty.
In your plan include the following sub headings with solutions:
• Footpaths and control of visitors around sensitive areas such as limestone pavements.
• Traffic control and parking
• The litter problem
• Outdoor activities like mountain biking
• Planning new buildings – houses, hotels, shops, cafes etc.
• Educating visitors about looking after the countryside.

Decide whether you think visitors should be kept away from some areas, or whether they should be allowed to go where they like.
