It was a very 'gentle' read - good to pick up at the end of a day! Like most of her books, this one is set in and around South Cheshire - as this is my home area it's easy to picture the locations mentioned. I've enjoyed all of her books, but there was something about this one that gave it the edge - perhaps the title is telling me something about where, deep down, I feel I should be!!

This is the first book of an extraordinary series in which Ged, an adolescent wizard with a chip on his shoulder, becomes the greatest mage of all. The magic of Earthsea is based on the power of names, so language is very important. If you read it aloud it sounds like an epic poem.
Henrietta Butler

Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell
This book was written in the 1950's and reading it 50 years on, I can see what an incredibly futuristic novel this was. Reading it now in 2003, it is obviously purely fictitious, but if I had been reading it when it was initially published it would have been very scary, almost a groundbreaking prediction. The book kept me gripped and there was no cliche happy ending. This is what I liked about it. It was horrific, if not a realistic account of being a prisoner of a war in a world ruled by dictators. This is why it is my favourite book.
