French is taught to half the forms in year 7, namely 7L, 7A, 7C and 7E, the other four forms studying Spanish as their main foreign language. It is taught in mixed-ability groups that are then set (in five ability groups) in year 8.

French lessons in year 7 are taught in conjunction with a core textbook, Expo, which was first introduced, successfully, in 2004.

Modules covered in the first year of French include:

• greetings

• family descriptions

• describing your home

• directions

• school

• hobbies.

In addition to learning new vocabulary and grammar points, each module gives an insight into French culture and offers comparisons between that and the system in England.

At the end of Y9, students can decide whether to continue their language studies or take other curricular options. To obtain G.C.S.E qualifications, students either take the linear examination or modular course depending on their ability.

French is also taught at AS and A2 by Mrs Rand and Mrs McCarthy, by Mrs Beamish and Mr Johns.
