Key Stage Five General RE
The General RE programme is an inclusive programme which was written by the department and accredited by the National Board (Sept.04). It is funded by the LSC and monitored by the Diocese.
The programme itself contributes significantly to the spiritual, moral and social development of all the pupils and it actively supports the pastoral programme. Specialist staff teach year 13 and given the size of year 12 other staff have been carefully chosen to work alongside the RE specialists in three teams. Each team covers one of the core components of the course at a time. This allows for a sharing of expertise by combining groups and through the use of resources.
In planning the course we used the ‘Broad Areas of Attainment 16-19’ document to ensure that the programme fulfilled the basic requirements of the Bishop’s conference whilst at the same time being appropriate to the age & development of the sixth form students. The details of the whole programme can be seen in the 16-19 Unit Of Learning. The basic themes explored throughout the course are as follows:
• ‘MY WORLD OF FAITH & MORALITY
• ‘MY WORLD OF RELATIONSHIPS’
• ‘HUMAN RIGHTS’
The year 13 programme builds on the previous course and explores carefully the ‘Philosophies of life & Living’. It also provides a valuable opportunity to consider what values and beliefs they have discovered so far in life and how they might prepare for the road ahead.
Student evaluations of the course are, in the main, are extremely positive as there is a high emphasis placed on creating an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere within each class which allows them to participate fully in the lessons.
Students assess their own learning at the end of each lesson and attendance is followed up assiduously within the department and by the relevant Heads of year.
