Who does it  |  Why do they do it?

Many companies and organisations now provide financial assistance or sponsorship to help a student through their university course.

Who does it
The main sponsors include:

  • Banks and accountancy firms such as Yorkshire Bank or Arthur Andersen.
  • The Armed Services.
  • Certain industries and companies such as Stagecoach or Bovis or IBM.
  • Professional bodies such as the Institution of Civil Engineering.
  • Government departments such as GCHQ.
  • Local authorities.
  • Some universities acting on behalf of companies and other employers.

Why do they do it?
The sponsorship system began some years ago when engineering and science companies in particular needed to offer incentives to attract the right graduate. Today engineering companies and the Armed Services are still the major sponsors.
